What is a LLETZ procedure?
LLETZ stands for Large Loop Excision of the Transformation Zone. (It’s also called LEEP — Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure — in some countries.) It’s a common treatment used to remove abnormal (precancerous) cells from the cervix. A thin wire loop with an electric current cuts away the affected area. It treats abnormal cells before they have a chance to develop into cervical cancer.
Why is it needed? A LLETZ is recommended if:
- Your Pap smear (or HPV test) showed abnormal cells, and
- A follow-up colposcopy + biopsy confirmed moderate to severe cell changes (CIN 2 or CIN 3) on the cervix. This is done to remove the abnormal area completely, so healthy tissue can regrow and lower your risk of developing cervical cancer.
How is it done?
- Usually done in a clinic or hospital outpatient setting, under local anesthesia (the cervix is numbed).
- A small wire loop with an electric current cuts away the abnormal tissue.
- It generally takes 10–15 minutes, and you go home the same day.
Benefits of LLETZ ✅ Removes abnormal cells immediately, reducing cancer risk. ✅ Quick & effective, with success rates over 90%. ✅ Most women heal well and go on to have normal pregnancies.
Possible side effects / risks
- Mild cramping & bleeding for up to 2–4 weeks.
- Watery brownish discharge as the cervix heals.
- Small risk of infection (watch for fever, heavy bleeding, bad odor).
- Slight increased risk of premature birth in future pregnancies (usually low).
- Rarely, scarring on the cervix (called cervical stenosis).
Summary LLETZ is a quick, effective procedure to remove precancerous cells from your cervix, preventing cervical cancer. It’s done after abnormal Pap smear & biopsy results show concerning cell changes.
LLETZ (LEEP) Before & After Care Guide Before your LLETZ ☐ Eat a light meal beforehand (unless told otherwise). ☐ Wear comfortable clothes & a pad (you may have some spotting right after). ☐ Avoid sex, tampons, or vaginal medications 24 hours before if your doctor advised. ☐ Take a mild pain reliever (like ibuprofen) 1 hour before, if your doctor suggests it. ☐ Relax — it’s quick (about 10–15 minutes).
After your LLETZ What to expect ✅ Mild cramping like period pain for a day or two. ✅ Watery pink/brown discharge for up to 4 weeks. ✅ Light bleeding for about 1–2 weeks.
Avoid for 4 weeks (or as your doctor advises) ☐ Sex (penetration) ☐ Tampons or menstrual cups ☐ Swimming or baths (showers are fine) → This helps your cervix heal and prevents infection.
Self-care tips ☐ Wear a sanitary pad (no tampons) for discharge. ☐ Take mild painkillers if needed. ☐ Rest the day of the procedure — normal activities the next day. ☐ Drink lots of water & eat nourishing foods.
Call your doctor if you have: 🚩 Heavy bleeding (soaking a pad in under an hour) 🚩 Severe pain not relieved by painkillers 🚩 Bad-smelling discharge 🚩 Fever or chills Healing & follow-up
- Your cervix takes about 4 weeks to fully heal.
- You’ll usually have a follow-up Pap smear in 6 months to check that all abnormal cells are gone.
Bottom line: Rest, avoid putting anything in the vagina for 4 weeks, and call your doctor if you’re worried. Most women heal well and go on with normal cycles and pregnancies.
