Pre-labour vs Real labour Symptoms
Here's a clear and reassuring guide to help you understand the difference between pre-labour symptoms (aka false labour) and true labour — so you can feel more confident and prepared as your due date approaches.
What is Pre-labour (False Labour)? Pre-labour (also called Braxton Hicks contractions) are the body’s natural way of preparing for birth. It can start weeks or days before real labour begins. Pre-labour Symptoms Include:
- Contractions that are irregular and don't get closer together over time
- Contractions that ease off or stop with rest, movement, or hydration
- Discomfort mostly in the front of the belly, rather than wrapping around to the back
- No change in your cervix
What is True Labour? True labour means your cervix is dilating, and baby is getting ready to make their grand entrance. It doesn’t stop with movement or hydration, and the contractions get stronger, closer together, and more painful.
Tips for What to Do: If You Think It’s Pre-labour:
- Try a warm bath
- Stay hydrated
- Rest or nap
- Gentle walks
If You Think It’s Real Labour:
- Time your contractions (track spacing and duration)
- Call your healthcare provider or head to the hospital if:
- Your waters break
- Contractions are regular and painful
- You have bleeding or reduced fetal movement
