Discharge as a Sign of Early Pregnancy
Possible Pregnancy Discharge Characteristics:
- Increased Volume
- Many women notice more discharge than usual—thin, white, or milky
- Caused by rising estrogen and increased blood flow to the vagina
- Leukorrhea
- A normal, thin, white or slightly yellow discharge
- Mild odor or no odor
- Present before missed period and continues early in pregnancy
- Keeps the cervix sealed and protected
- Creamy or Lotion-like Texture
- Some women describe it as “creamy” or “sticky,” especially after ovulation if conception has occurred
- Implantation Spotting (Not Discharge, but Related)
- Light pink or brown spotting 6–12 days after ovulation
- May mix slightly with cervical mucus, looking tinged
What’s Not Typical for Pregnancy Discharge:
- Itchy, green, or thick yellow → could signal an infection
- Foul-smelling → BV or yeast infection
- Chunky or cottage cheese-like → likely a yeast infection
Confirming Pregnancy While discharge can be a clue, it’s not definitive. For confirmation:
- Wait until your missed period and take a pregnancy test
- Or test 10–14 days after ovulation (early detection test)
