Common Flu in Pregnancy

The flu can feel more intense during pregnancy due to changes in your immune system, lungs, and heart.

Do’s – What You Should Do Rest & Recovery

  • Rest often and allow your body to heal.
  • Stay warm and hydrated — drink water, clear soups, or herbal teas like rooibos or chamomile. Nourish Gently
  • Eat light, nutritious meals — bone broth, oats, fruit, and toast.
  • Include immune-friendly foods: citrus (vitamin C), garlic, ginger, and yogurt. Clear Congestion Safely
  • Use a saline nasal spray or humidifier to ease stuffiness.
  • Try a warm steam inhalation with eucalyptus or peppermint oil (a few drops only). Reduce Fever
  • Use a cool compress on your forehead.
  • Dress in layers to manage body temperature comfortably.

Don’ts – What to Avoid

  • Don’t self-medicate — not all over-the-counter meds are safe.
  • Avoid high-dose vitamin supplements (especially A and E) without a doctor’s guidance.
  • Don’t ignore a high fever (38.5°C / 101.3°F or above) — call your provider.
  • Avoid aspirin or ibuprofen — they are not safe during pregnancy, especially in the third trimester.

Safe Medications During Pregnancy (Always double-check with your doctor or midwife) If symptoms persist beyond 3–5 days, worsen, or include chest pain, shortness of breath, high fever, or reduced fetal movement, seek medical attention right away.
